Alexis C. Glenn Monty Cross holds two warning tickets and a search warrant from the Virginia Department of Game and Inland Fisheries. After the officials searched their entire property and seized their 3 legally-owned miniature deer, all they were given was two warning tickets and a search warrant without an affidavits. The deer were euthanized following the search, of which the Cross' are challenging the legality.
Monty and Robin Cross said they plan to meet with representatives from the DGIF in Richmond today.
What happened?
Monty Cross told his side of the story in a three-page written statement. In it, he explained that about three years ago he decided to give a pair of muntjacs to his wife as a birthday present. But he said he only purchased the animals from a zoo after researching how to care for them and whether it is legal to own them here.
While conducting the research, he said he spoke to an animal control officer from the Fauquier County Sheriffs Office, who told him that it is legal to own the miniature deer here and that he did not need a permit or license from the county in order to do so.
“I drove down to the zoo and met the wife of the zoo’s owner. We selected animals that were not related to each other (and) netted and crated the muntjacs. I paid several hundred dollars for each animal and returned home to a very surprised wife,” Cross said in the statement. He said Robin Cross epjoyed raising the adult muntjacs and was overjoyed when the pair had a fawn.
