Bise said his agency sends such teams to serve warrants' in these cases because they are never sure exactly what they will find or how people will react.
“We have tried to elicit cooperation in these cases, but in some cases we get to (the place where the animals are allegedly being kept) and everything is just gone,” Bise said. “We try to do it as gently and delicately as we can, but we have no way to predict whether we will find good guys or bad guys.”
Bise acknowledged that Monty and Robin Cross were “cooperative” while Miller’s team executed the warrant.
“He even shook (our captain’s) hand,” Bise said.
Bise confirmed that the Crosses were not charged with any criminal offense because it appeared that Monty Cross “received some bad information” about the legality of keeping the animals.
“There are permits for people to conduct research or exhibit the animals, but there are no permits to keep them strictly as pets,” said media relations coordinator Julia Dixon. Proper precautions?
Bise and Dixon said the DGIF is especially concerned about people keeping any type of deer in captivity due to potential spread of Chronic Wasting Disease.
