where he grew up in Rappahannock County, has offered ambulatory services since the 1987 Rappahannock High grad hung out a shingle in 1998. This spring Massie’s practice, which now includes three large-animal veterinarians and two small-animal veterinarians, opened a large-animal clinic to complement the small animal-clinic that opened in January 2003.
“The practice started in the back bedroom of my house,” Massie explained as he traced the years between his 1991 graduation from Virginia Tech (with a bachelor’s degree in animal science), his *95 DVM from the Virginia Maryland Regional College of Veterinary Medicine, his startup ambulatory practice around the Purcellville area in Loudoun County, and the 1998 return to his Rappahannock roots.
Joining Massie in his equine practice are Dr. Derek Vandrey and Dr. Monica O’Brien. Vandrey specializes in equine dentistry. Massie said the primary focus is on preventative and performance dentistry, but Vandrey and the other vets also perform corrective procedures, using the most modem science and techniques in the new clinic setting.
Ambulatory services include X-ray, ultrasound, bueeding exams’ and care, video endoscopy, annual vaccinations and nutrition consultations.
In January 2006, with the opening of the clinic, Rose Hill expanded to provide hospitalization, lay-up, on-site foaling, semen collection, embryo donor services, boarding and neonatal intensive care.
