credit. If people in a small rural agency haven’t been equipped or trained in a particular area, there should be no shame. We don’t expect Rappahannock County to have its own helicopter, boats or even a team like television’s “CSI” for evidence. But I do expect the person responsible to make the call if those items or people are necessary. If my family is the victim, I don’t care if you have to wait for the FBI to come from Quantico, just make sure the work is done to correct standards. The sheriff, or future sheriff candidates, should focus on law enforcement first and leave political affairs for election time.
I ask the citizens of Rappahannock and the media to begin asking questions and verify answers. When did Rappahannock Sheriff’s Officer advise other law enforcement with lookout information? When did they advise the public? (Both the neighbors and potential witnesses, and ask the media?) If the suspect fled on foot, when were additional resources requested such as helicopters, K-9, evidence collection units, extra perimeter officer’s, etc.? There are many other questions to ask, but I would never want to harm the investigation or prosecution. I’ll save the majority of questions for when the trial is complete.
