even with incredible styling -and innovation (e.g. first caliper disk brakes), a tendency to produce vehicles the ‘old-fashioned way’ finally caught up with them.
But then ‘progress’ caught up with the Conestogas as well. The railroad quickly supplanted the big wagons I after about 1840. But until I then, it was ‘10-4 good buddy*, between the “big rigs’ at all the dusty old road
stops. In contrast,
Studebaker manufactured
horse-drawn vehicles until 1920.
So light up a stogie or lift a pint (or two) to salute the Conestogas, Kiger, ‘ole Rosin’ the Beau’, hogsheads, and of course, Studebaker. And just think: a hogshead of whiskey or wine is just one silly gallon short of a barrel of oil (at $74 today and counting). If we figure at least $40/gal for a nice wine, this means that a hogshead of spirits goes for $2000 or more. So look, what’s your problem with gas prices? Wagon’s ho!
