The recent homicide case

has concerned many citizens of Rappahannock, but for what reason? Is it the crime alone, or the performance of law enforcement? I have questions both as a citizen and also as a fellow law enforcement officer. I’ll say that this isn’t intended as “sour grapes” by a former Deputy Sheriff of this county. On the contrary, I’m pleased to not be part of the current administration and sincerely sympathize with past and present deputies who would like to have better training and equipment in order to better protect our families. A deputy sheriff serves at the pleasure of the sheriff and rarely will speak against him. Unfortunately, this is often true of citizens as well, simply because of their fear of retaliation.

I believe the best agencies in the world can become better if they critique their operations and have open dialog concerning procedures. The main focus should always be to complete the task at hand with the best results for public safety. This doesn’t matter whether the person wears a brown, blue, gray, or green uniform If a person begins to make decisions based on political scrutiny, they should stop and remember to act as they would if the victim were their immediate family member.
