Returning to the stable following what he called “positive flexion” tests on the right hind, Massie affects a quiet bedside manner, flexing the rear foot and manipulating it with hoof testers that resemble gigantic ice tongs, designed as they are to detect the most minute soreness in the equine hoof.
“Whoa, whoa there,” Massie says as the horse jerks in reaction to pressure on the back portion of the foot. “Easy, boy.”
He straightens and pats the horse’s rump. “No foot, no horse. Fm leaning towards a simple bruise.” Massie prescribes a few days off to allow the minor injury to clear up before the big show.
Massie’s diagnosis passes the test a week later when William Don’t Tell was able to show as scheduled in the Invitational Hack at the recent Upperville Colt and Horse Show.
“He was fine,” Massie said later. “It was just a bruise. But you won’t know unless you check it out.”
