repeated throughout the manhunt, with law enforcement responding to sightings by setting up a new perimeter, and each time Cloniger managed to somehow slip through the net. The assembled search force did not get another break until Friday July 7, when a female associate of Cloniger’s told them that he had called her from a Rappahannock phone number, assigned to a house just two miles from the original crime scene, belonging to Keir Whitson, who was not home at the time. However, search teams, found no other trace of Cloniger at the Whitson home.
“We had come up empty. It was too bad , because [the report] sounded so credible and we were there so quick,” said Sheriff Sherertz.
No further sign of Cloniger was reported until Saturday evening, when a Rappahannock County Deputy spotted him on Tiger Valley road, several miles from his original position. The RCSO and State
f>olice were able to estabish a cordon around the area, and Cloniger was spotted briefly from a helicopter by RCSO Maj. Chris Williams before he again vanished. However, Cloniger didn’t stay vanished for long.
It all ended late Sunday night after a call in tip from a passing motorist reported Cloniger crossing US 211 near the junction with Route 522 called Massie’s Corner. After a week of hunting him with the help of outside agencies and large groups of officers, Cloniger was surrounded in a field off of US 211 by just three local Rappahannock officers, including Sheriff Larry Sherertz, and Trooper Don Corbin of the State police.
When a K-9 unit from Culpeper County arrived to assist the RCSO, the officer’s German Shepherd “was extraordinarily responsive, roaring to go,” said Sheriff Sherertz. According to the Sheriff, Cloniger heard the loudly barking dog and stood up in plain view, telling the officers that he wanted to surrender.
Cloniger was denied bond in an appearance before the Rappahannock County General District Court on Tuesday July 11. He is charged with First Degree murder, and according to Commonwealth’s Attorney Peter Luke could face life in prison if convicted, since he has already been convicted of two previous felonies.
