Tb handle the production, she hires Vivian Van Danim (Bob Hoskins) who demands complete creative control. He and Laura are immediately at odds, but the result of their collaboration is “Revudeville,” an immediate success. However, after getting off to a smashing start, the show sputters. That’s when Mrs. Henderson comes up with a revolutionary idea to boost business— take a page from the French and make the showgirls nude. The Lord Chamberlain (Christopher Guest), who must okay this brash idea, agrees but with one proviso: The entertainers will assume tasteful poses reminiscent of classical sculpture and painting.
“Mrs. Henderson Presents” is at times poignant, uplifting and sometimes very funny. Dench and Hoskins are, as usual, outstanding. The two veteran actors play off one another with sparks flying. Kelly Reilly as Maureen is a most impressive newcomer. Christopher Guest is dryly funny in a small role. Although technically not a musical, “Mrs. Henderson Presents” is filled with musical numbers, some of them quite accomplished. Humor and warmth abound.
The film is rated R and contains nudity and brief profanity. Run time is 102 minutes.
