A history of fine food
and friendliness
Gaedke first opened a health food store in Rappahannock County in 1975. Since then she has served residents of Rappahannock County in various places including in what was known as Rae’s Place, located on the Schoolhouse property in Sperryville.
Sunnyside Farms bought Rae’s Place in 2003 and added it to their operations at the Schoolhouse.
In May 2005, however, Sunnyside closed the deli much to the dismay of many local residents.
Now that Sunnyside has pulled out of the Schoolhouse property altogether, many former Sunnyside employees showed up to support Gaedke as she rebuilds.
“I’d say that out of everybody who came, about half of them were from Sunnyside,” Gaedke said.
“We want our community center back again,” said interior designer Paul Erlenbom, “We haven’t had it around for a while.”
Erlenbom is donating his talents for the project.
Gaedke smiles when asked about her popular deli. “People came to us because we served real food, quality food, but you really have to make sure that people walk out the door and be glad they came. . . I always like to describe it with the “Cheers” theme song: ‘Sometimes you want to go Where everybody knows your name.’”
Gaedke will continue to renovate the building and open in upcoming months. Volunteers
