She also said that he had taken the car, telling her he was going to the store, but had not returned. A history of terror Further interviews with family members established that Ms. Hart had ended their common-law marriage about a year and a half ago, and had been given custody of their son. Leaf was angered by the split, and harassed and threatened Ms. Hart, her mother and stepfather. In March, 1987, he abducted the boy and was charged with kidnapping.
In April, 1987, with the kidnapping unsolved and the boy still missing, Leaf abducted Ms. Hart as she left work, and pistol-whipped her until she agreed to drop the kidnapping charge. She required hospital treatment for her injuries. The charged, however, was not dropped by the police department in Trumbull. Leaf, who still had the boy, continued to threaten Ms. Hart and her family, demanding custody of the boy and threatening to kill her if she continued to refuse. She went into hiding for some time last year, living with friends. She told them she was fearful that if she surfaced Leaf would abduct her again and kill her. Just before Christmas, Fairfield police received a tip that Leaf, a carpenter, and the boy would be at a Christmas party at a construction site. According to Fairfield police Captain Robert Comers, police found the two there, but were harassed by workers at the party while trying to arrest Leaf. In the melee, someone grabbed the boy and fled.
