John David Samuel Hartline, 88, of Washington, Va., died July 7 at Potomac Hospital in Woodbridge, Va. He was born on November 13, 1917, in Anna, 111., to the late George Oscar Hartline and Stella Elizabeth Kimmel Hartline.
Mr. Hartline served his country in the United States Army for over 30 years. While on active duty in the Army Signal Corps, he served in the south pacific during World War II, in the Korean War, in the Vietnam War and at numerous locations in the United States, Japan and Germany. His military service decorations include the following: the Army Commendation Medal with one oak leaf cluster, the Joint Service Commendation Medal with one oak leaf cluster, the Air Medal with three oak leaf clusters, the Meritorious Service Medal and the Legion of Merit with one oak leaf cluster. He was a qualified paratrooper completing both the Basic Airborne Course and Jump Master Course at Fort Campbell, KY. He retired from the Army in 1973 at the rank of Colonel. After his retirement, he joined the effort to design and build the Washington Metro Subway System as an electrical engineer.
