Court date set
on sex offender
Samuel A. Marvin, an alleged sex offender from Sperryville, has been found mentally competent to stand trial. Marvin’s trial had originally been scheduled for August 22, however his attorney, Mark Williams, filed an emergency motion asking for a continuance on the grounds that his client was not mentally competent to stand trial. Williams stated in court on November 28 that the mental evaluation was complete and he was ready to set a trial date. Marvin is charged with aggravated sexual battery to a victim under age 13 and taking indecent liberties with a minor. Marvin was originally arrested on April 7 by the Rappahannock County Sheriff’s Office. The trial date is now set for March 26th and 27th of 2007.
Judge Jeffery Parker also denied Marvin’s fifth attempt to review bond.

Cloniger Trial
Ira Wayne Cloniger returned to the 5th Circuit Court for charges of possessing a firearm after being convicted of a violent felony. The trial for this offense is scheduled for January 8, 2007. Cloniger is currently charged with the murder of Edward Fletcher Jr. and was the subject of a week long manhunt last July. His murder trial is scheduled for January 22, 2007. Cloniger was also found guilty of unlawful wounding by a Culpeper jury in October for a stabbing incident that happened prior to the murder.
