If the inner cushions are lumpy and worn, you will not get good wear or appearance from a new fabric for very long. If you actually have something CUSTOM slip covered, which I would always recommend, you will have to give up your sofa or chair and have it “sent out” to be fitted. Of course, there will be a fee associated with this. It compares, again, to having a suit of clothing or a dress made for you. The labor can be expensive when the cutting and sewing is for a specific fit and “flow”. But this is well worth it! If you want the look of a slip cover, it can be done with quality!
“Off the rack” slip covers have become quite popular for a quick fix, and I have seen a couple that would ably serve for a short time in the right place. If there is some amount of stretch included in the fabric, you will be more likely to get a good fit. Make sure your slip cover fabric is opaque and that the old fabric is not showing through, that the furniture is actually covered from head to toe. The slip cover needs to stay put, and not slide around on the furniture or you will find yourself very busy readjusting it each time it is used.
It is very clear that reupholstering and slip covering are issues that need to be carefully considered. A good designer can lead you to a skilled reupholsterer or advise you to replace your furniture, and help you avoid making a costly mistake!
