One possibility, he said, is the town’s historic designation and historic district guidelines may remain as they are within the current boundaries and a “variable area plan” would apply to added areas of the town, excluding them from the historic district and exempting them from historic district guidelines.

Bill Metcalfe, who lives on Piedmont Avenue and initiated the petition, said the historic designation is less important to Piedmont-Oden residents than being included in the town’s wastewater plan and being able to vote in town elections.
