“For a commercial enterprise to come in and use the power of the state and federal governments to take that away is an outrage,” Diamond said.
Look at the alternatives first, Diamond said. Strengthen the existing power grid so it will handle more traffic. Look at “demand side” solutions - encourage users to cut back at peak demand times, and to use power at off-peak times. Build small, clean power plants close to where the power is needed.
Loudoun developer John Nicholas was on hand to support that idea. He owns 93 acres of land next to the Areola substation. It would be ideal, he said, for a 3,000 megawatt gasfired power plant.
And two interstate gas lines run right across the property now.
