I am often asked whether it is better to slip cover reupholster or purchase a new chair or sofa. The expectation of the client when slip covering or reupholstering is usually to save money, but other reasons to reupholster or slip cover furniture are sentimental attachments, comfort of the existing piece, an aversion to drastic change] or simply worn fabric. The slip covered look is actually very much in vogue, and is a current trend. Reupholstering and slip covering are a form of recycling, and that is always good. Many considerations come into play when the decision is made to reupholster or slip cover something, and this article will address them. Reupholstering and slip covering are two entirely different issues, so they will be dealt with separately. Reupholstery entails completely removing the outer fabric, and frequently involves rebuilding or replacing the “innards”, i.e. cushions, arms, seat backs, coils, frames, etc. Only when the insides are in tip-top shape, and only then, is it a wise move to cut and sew a brand new custom fitted fabric cover on the piece.
