If the State Corporation Commission rejects Dominion’s route proposal, the utility could appeal the decision to the U.S. Department of Energy, Anderson said. However, “it’s not our intention to involve the federal government,” she said. “We have a good history with the State Corporation Commission. We may not get the routes we recommend, but (the review process) is fair.” The application probably will include several recommended routes, Anderson said.
By year’s end, PEC expects to spend $600,000 fighting Dominion, Miller said. If the battle “proceeds” through 2007, PEC must raise an addition $1.5 million, he added.
Hearing that, a man in the audience challenged everyone in the auditorium to write PEC a $50 check before going home.
For a contribution, PEC had 500 red t-shirts to .give out Monday night that read: “Thanks For Ruining Our Hobdays, But We Don’t Want Your Dirty Coal,” “Don’t Be Taken By Dominion,” “Greed, Not Need,” “Whose Dominion Is It?” and “Change Your Light Bulb, Save Your Land.”
PEC staff distributed a bst of 20 questions it encouraged people to pose Dominion officials at the company’s Marshall meeting Wednesday.
Herbert warned the audience that “very smooth” Dominion spokespeople would be at Wednesday’s workshop in the Marshall Ruritan Club, ready to spin them. “They’re going to use (the workshop) as an opportunity to build thencase,” she said. “You’ll give them more information than you’ll get from them.”
Herbert expects Dominion to argue that without the proposed line the region would suffer blackouts, forcing large energy consumers like data centers to collapse. Don’t buy it, she told the crowd, adding that big, important users have backup systems under such circumstances.
