Shenandoah National Park has implemented closures of the Skyline Drive due to extensive damage caused by an ice storm. The ice storm which began on Wednesday, November 22 resulted in power outages and thousands of downed trees and limbs. Crews worked throughout the Thanksgiving day and on Friday to open the Skyline Drive from Thornton Gap at Route 211 south to the Big Meadows area and from Front Royal to the Dickey Ridge area at milepost 4.5. All other areas of Skyline Drive remain closed. Park staff will assess trails and structures today and will continue to clear Skyline Drive of debris.
Park visitor centers, lodges, restaurants and gift shops closed for the winter on November 26. The Skyline Drive is normally closed from 5 pm to 8 am each night during hunting season.
