Slip covering has become quite stylish and up to date. Many current catalogs and trendy furniture stores feature chairs, sofas, and chaises made simply in muslin (a non- descript white fabric meant to be an “under layer”) and then offer the customer a choice of slip cover fabrics. These slip covers are custom made for that particular piece of furniture and usually work quite well. Sometimes, though not always, they claim to be washable! So, the practicality is great, as long as the fabric actually does wash and wear gracefully. These are not usually “cheap”, but they are affordable. The longevity of the slip cover trend is probably yet to be determined, but it would be wise to make sure that you can replace it down the line if need be.
Slip covering an existing piece of furniture is another matter. Just as when you reupholster something, it needs to be in fairly good shape to deserve a new cover.
