Very affordable pieces of upholstered furniture are available from a variety of places, and they can honestly look quite good when new. The styling of less expensive pieces has improved greatly during the last few years, but the quality does not always follow. What I am saying is that you may find a sofa or chair that is new for the same price you might pay to reupholster! And for just a little more, you might be able to buy a very well made custom design that will serve you even better!
The price of picking up your piece by truck and delivering it back to you must be factored in as well. Reupholstering furniture is a skill that varies from shop to shop, and the upholsterer should be chosen carefully. Also, it is very important that enough fabric is provided so that the job can be done in an attractive way. “Flow matching”, meaning the pattern on the fabric must flow down or match from back to seat to deck to base, is essential. So, the cost effectiveness of reupholstering is something to be evaluated very carefully. Reupholstering very definitely has its place in the world of interior design, but the piece must meet the criterion of quality plus basic good looks to make it work!
