cultures
Virginia author Glenna Loving, who both wrote and illustrated the children’s story Shenandoah, Daughter of the Stars, recently visited WCDS and gave a presentation to several groups of lower school children.
Ms. Loving, a Strasburg resident, read from her beautiful book about a young Native American girl in the Shenandoah Valley, described her techniques in creating the pic-, tures, and shared her collection of Native American artifacts.

School News
Hearthstone School celebrated is annual Thanksgiving meal on November 22. This annual potluck meal is made even more special as each class creates a dish to share at the meal.
This year, students created dishes from all-organic ingredients, including mashed potatoes, pies, breads, butternut squash, salads, cookies and homemade cranberry sauce.
Each class also gave a blessing before the meal. Special blessings included the third grade’s, which was given in Hebrew as part of the class’ Old Testament Study Block, and Hearthstone’s two exchange students who shared blessings in their native languages of German and Cantonese.
Justine Rosenbaum’s third grade class created centerpieces for the Thanksgiving meal. As part of his or her study of creation stories, each student created a beautiful beeswax representation of the Garden of Eden.
Botanical field trip
The high school class recently visited the Washington, D.C. Botanical Gardens and the Natural History Museum to close out their Ecology Study Block.
Students enjoyed identifying and viewing up close many of the subjects of their studies, which they had previously seen only in books.
