“As long as you’re willing to work hard, put in reports and go to classes - pretty much anybody can do it,” she said.
Puppy raisers are required to take the animals to classes twice per month, but Hayduk said she takes her labs once each week. She said the network of people involved with the program is tight-knit and there are chatrooms set up to help support both new and old puppy raisers. Those who meet for classes discuss the things their animals are doing well and what strategies work best for them. Their ages range from retired to a girl who is a student in high school, according to Hayduk.
Hayduk said in addition to being able to work with the puppies, she liked the idea of the dogs being free for those who demonstrate a need.
In this program, the dogs are sent back to CCI Regional Headquarters in Long Island, N.Y. to receive six more months of advanced training before being tested and placed with people enrolled in the program.
