“We competed against governor’s schools, private schools, charter schools and much larger public schools for the whole meet,” said Naser. “We went in expecting to lose every match, but the fact that we had two wins says a lot. It says a lot about the dedication of the kids who competed.”
Rappahannock’s team of seniors Rachel Zeh, Matt Bywaters and Amber Long; junior Nancy Herbert; and sophomore A.J. Collins left at 6 a.m. for the tournament. Only Collins is a starter for the academic team; the other were substituting for starters who had prior commitments elsewhere.
Still, Naser praised the play of the others.
“They knew that they were going to be beaten,” he said. “We could have bagged the whole thing, but I don’t think that they regret going.”
