Future funding
Next Step, a branch of Headwaters, was started with a generous, two-year grant from the Jack Kent Cooke foundation obtained by Headwaters Coordinator of Grants and Partnerships, Amy Silver O’Leary. Hope and some volunteers remodeled an old boy’s locker room that had been given to her by the high school. Members of the community donated some of the furniture while the school provided the program with computer equipment. In August of 2006, Lauren K. Ross, a Franklin Scholar from the University of Virginia, joined the Next Step team.
The Jack Kent Cooke grant is set to expire on December 31 of this year, which has Hope and Ross pressihg the need for additional funding. Although the school board has included $5,000 for the program in their budget, the program needs an additional $35,000 a year for further operations.
