Rappahannock County School Board Chairman John Wesley Mills reluctantly brought the topic of school board member salaries to the board, as they prepare to discuss the 2008 school budget. , “Nobody likes to talk about it,” ' he said flatly, “But I think we should take a look at our expenses and consider discussing it next January.”
All members currently serving on the board make $600 annually. Mills was quick to add that any salary raise for school board members would not apply to the current board. “It seems presumptuous to talk about a raise for yourself,” Mills said, “However, it’s not a raise for us. It will be a raise for whoever serves on the next School Board.”
The next election for Rappahannock County School Board members will be held in November 2007. The newly elected board would take office for a fouryear term, beginning in 2008. Current school board members are allowed to run for re-election in November.
Mills suggested that the board members look over their current expenses, including fuel and telephone bills, encouraging them to bring it to the table for discussion. “I know that the job requires a volunteer spirit,” said Mills, “but we should offer the volunteer due compensation.”
Surrounding counties pay School Board members more than four times the salary of Rappahannock County School Board Members.
