Rappahannock’s participation in Saturday’s tournament ended a busy week.
On Wednesday, the Panthers finished 17th out of 31 state high schools in the fall Knowledge Masters Open. Rappahannock rolled up 1,314 points, 90 points more than 18th-place Wilson Memorial, one of the Panthers’ Region B competitors.
Overall, Rappahannock finished 266 out of 783 teams competing from around the world.
On Monday night, Rappahannock County scored an impressive 260-85 win over Clarke County, but fell apart in its second match to arch rival George Mason. The Mustangs scored a 330-100 victory over the Panthers in Group A Bull Run District action Monday night at Manassas Park.
Only a week earlier, Rappahannock County gave the Mustangs an outstanding match in losing 275-185.
The Panthers had little or no trouble with Clarke County, which lost its 2005-06 Region B-qualifying starting lineup to graduation. After the opening round, Rappahannock held a 100-10 lead. ; “We did really well in the first round, so I figured that I might as well stay with the starting lineup instead of substituting,” said Naser.
The same cannot be said about Rappahannock’s match with George Mason. The Panthers had just 10 points after the opening round against the Mustangs.
“(The match) ended up the way I expected it to,” said Naser. “But I expected it to be closer.”
The Panthers recovered to score a 190-115 win over Manassas Park, but they certainly made the competition interesting. After .the first round, Rappahannock only led by 60-40.
“I think we were thrown off-balance after the Mason match,” said Naser. “It took some time for us to recover. Fortunately, we did.”
