the Cartwright-Browns drove out to Rappahannock. Lovingly Renovated The old house on Route 707 was a far cry from a country inn when Sandra first saw it. “It was a slum. It had been empty for three years,” she said, shaking her head at the memory. Sandra and Norman bought the place in November 1979, and spent the next spring and summer attacking the honeysuckle, weeds and trash in the yard, and repairing damage to the interior resulting from years of neglect. “I was finishing the floors by hand one day. It’s such tedious work — my brain was in neutral. The thought came to me to have a bed and breakfast country inn,” Sandra recalled. Fate had sent her husband to Nigeria on business. “He wasn’t here to say no, so I got started immediately. We’ve really concentrated on the place since April.” The object of their efforts was to restore rather than remodel, preserving the old-timey flavor of the historic home. Part of the original section was built in thg early 1800s.
