Planning
Throughout most of the country, we have enjoyed an unusually mild fall but it appears that winter has finally arrived. This is a great time to sit inside and begin planning for any planting that will be done in spring. Most gardening magazines now feature articles describing new plant introductions for the coming year. When selecting plants, consider not only the visual characteristics but also the biological requirements of the species. Consider how much sun it needs, soil conditions and how much space it requires at maturity. Are the cultural requirements of the plants compatible with any nearby existing plants? If you have limited space for additional plantings in your garden, look for plants that provide multi-season interest such as showy bark or fruit that is attractive in winter.
