College field trips have become popular at the school, as the Next Step team has taken 175 students to visit 28 different colleges. “Statistics show that students are more interested in college once they see it for themselves,” said Hope.
One of her biggest drives, however, is to build donations to the “Dream Fund,” a scholarship program to give kids financial aid. In 2005, Next Step collected $36,000 for the scholarship fund.
In 2006, the fund received $70,000 worth of grants and pledges. “Having scholarship money helps me to make a big difference in helping a student go to college,” she said. “Even $1,000 can make a big difference in that decision.” k
The statistics that Hope and Ross are most proud of, are those of first-generation college students coming out of Rappahannock County Public Schools.
Three students from the class of 2005 were the first in their families to go on to college, while in the class of 2006, 19 first-generation students sought enrollment at a four year college. “First-generation kids are those who break the barriers,” said Hope adding, “parents who have gone to college usually make it more of a priority for their kids to do the same.”
