using binoculars or telescopes. NGC 457, also known as the “Owl Cluster,” contains over 100 stars, but is 9,000 light-years away. At that distance the stars of the cluster must be very luminous indeed.
For those who don’t own a pair binoculars or a telescope, or for those who simply wish to admire the “jewels” of the night sky, the naked eye is the best observing tool.
So if you can stand the cold, the stars and constellations of winter are especially the brightest and colorful, more so than in any other season to be seen.
As Christmas draws near, the giving of gifts is on everyone’s mind. Especially the gift of jewelry. What more could a lady ask for?
But for some of us, the sky is filled with the most wonderful jewels of all.
