After starting the season with five road games, the Rappahannock County varsity boys basketball team returned to their home court Tuesday evening for a rematch against Warren County, which beat them 63-25 on Dec. 5.
The setting was different, but the ending was the same, as the Wildcats struck down the Panthers 71-37.
Warren County had a hot start, leaping out to a 14-2 lead midway through the first quarter. But the Panthers did not back down.
Rappahannock ramped up its defensive intensity, and broke down the Wildcats’ press during the final four minutes of the first period, en route to an 80 run that closed the gap to 1410.
Four Panther players - Patrick Hanberry, Adam Gessner, Irving Smith and Chase Tupper - chipped in during the scoring burst.
Warren County ended the streak with a 3-pointer, and Tupper answered with a 3-pointer of his own, to reach a 17-13 score at the end of the first period.
The game went out of reach for Rappahannock during the second quarter, which began with a 15-0 run by Warren County. The Wildcats outscored the Panthers 22-3 during the period, and went into the locker room at halftime with a 39-16 lead. By the end of the third quarter, Warren County had expanded its lead to 59-27.
