portation. At $16,200, Bloomer noted, the cost of a vehicle equiped for this purpose equals the cost of a new school bus.
He reported that five or six handicapped children are currently being transported by their parents for therapy with the school system paying mileage charges. In addition, he said, pre-schoolers in the child development program are being driven to and from school in standard vehicles assigned to administration use. “Frankly, the safety factor scares me,” Bloomer said. He told the school board that one of the CDS children had managed to distract the driver long enough to unlock a back door, open it and swing on the handle as the car traveled at approximately 50 mph.
The transportation budget also includes replacement of two buses ($32,400), replacement of a service vehicle ($5,500) and a $2,000 decrease in payments in lieu of transportation (dependant upon purchase of the special education vehicle.) In addition, transportation costs reflect an additional driver (for the special education vehicle), more field trips and rises in gas prices.
