Robinson reported on by Luke at Thursday’s board meeting, the Interior Department has agreed to revisions in the program that will allow “In Lieu” payments on any property acquired by the state for the sole purpose of turning the land over to the federal government. However, Luke noted, the property must have been transferred to federal ownership within eight years of being acquired by the state.
Luke suggested that volunteers be used to check county land records since he felt it would be easier for local government to certify that property met federal requirements than to have the project done in Richmond.
