This statistic does not refer only to students who have not finished high school. On the contrary, this statistic encompasses two-year college graduates. Therefore, most of our children are being poorly educated and advanced to the next higher grade. This practice must cease. It is harming the students far more than it is helping them. Prisons are overcrowded with students who were rushed through school.
An inmate named Jerome Little and myself have worked in the school and library areas as aides for over three years. During this time, students and other inmates have approached us in need for assistance. We finally arrived at the conclusion that we could explain matters or issues in five minutes and have the pupil understand what some teachers have not been able to explain during the course of an entire semester.
Little and I toyed with the idea of working with students prior to taking the GED test. We believed if we could teach the principles, theories, rules, and test-taking techniques related to basic education,
