Of the 69 deaths in Rappahannock County in 1977, 42 were deaths due to cardiovascular diseases, according to statistics released by the Virginia Department of Health, Bureau of Vital Records and Health Statistics.

In Virginia cardiovascular diseases accounted for 18,744 or 47.6 per cent while cancer was responsible for 7,835 or 19.8 per cent. Accidents caused 2,566 deaths, influenza and pneumonia, 1,102 and from all other causes, 9,171.
