When the cousins decided against the purchase, Mary and Clev decided the farm would be a good choice for them as his job as a Commissioner with the Red Cross had now brought them to the Washington, D. C. office.
At the close of the deal, Mrs. Cleverley relates, they learned they had purchased not only a farm, but also a school building (the former Lottie School). She and her husband fixed up the place for a summer home, and renewing the original red paint on the exterior, they called their place, “Little Red.”
They were busy fixing up “Little Red” and making plans to build a new, peri manent retirement home , when Mr. Cleverley died suddenly of a heart attack. She describes this unexpected event as the beginning of “another life” for herself.
