The Rappahannock Supervisors decided at their March 1 board meeting to continue efforts to gain title to the old Scrabble school, an issue that’s been bubbling on the back burner for 11 years.
When sale of the old school was first considered in 1968, the school board discovered it didn’t hold clear title to the property.
According to a letter from attorney Douglas Baumgardner read at Thursday’s board meeting, T. C. Lea, now retired from legal practice, was retained in 1968 to clear the title and sell the old school. Although the property was used as a school from the mid 1920’s through the 1960’s when county schools were integrated, no deed of record is on file in the clerk’s office, Baumgardner reported.
In his letter, Baumgardner asked the supervisors for authorization to continue efforts to gain clear title, noting that legal fees for the case now totaled almost $1,000. He wrote that he anticipated having to do additional work before a court decree is issued.
