Legislative Firewall
It is possible that the company is launching this effort to build a legislative firewall against such increased controls further down the road. From Vepco’s perspective, it would be a logical and understandable precaution.
But from the standpoint of the electricity consumers who pay the freight, the prospect is very nearly unthinkable.
Political power in the hands of the utilities would mean added influence, if not control, over the State Corporation Commission, the courts and any other bodies elected by the General Assembly or appointed by the governor.
Carried to its brutally logical conclusion, it could make a grim reality of the bumper stickers we occasionally see on cars which say, “Welcome to Virginia—Owned and Operated by Vepco.”
