Rappahannock’s Varsity Panthers couldn’t hold on to the Bull Run District’s championship trophy Saturday night as they ended up an the short end against heavily favored Strasburg, 57-61.
But the Panthers came on hard and strong in their earlier tournament matches Wednesday and Friday, proving that they could indeed win in post season play. Although they didn’t take Bull Run’s top place, their victories over Manassas Park and Stonewall Jackson clinched a regional berth for the Panthers and they’ll face Madison’s Mountaineers on Wednesday at Western Albermarle in Charlottesville.
The Panthers started down the tournament road at home on February 29 against the Manassas Park Cougars. In the regular season they were downed twice by the Cougars, giving the Manassas Park team, next to the bottom finishers in Bull Run standings, two of their three victories of the year. It was evident from the outset that the Panthers were determined not to be upset by the visiting upstarts again. They outplayed the Cougars in every aspect of the game for four quarters as they coasted on their biggest winning margin of the year, 74-47.
At the offensive end of the court, the Panthers were unstoppable. Clarence Pendleton looked like he could score at will, hitting everything from outside jumpers to slam dunks, on his way to a 22 point game
