Be sure the inoculant contains live, active bacteria that will provide the roots with nitrogen, he advised. Use some sort of “Bticker — Pepsi, water or beer, whatever you want to use” so the inoculant clings to every seed.
Should a farmer forget to inoculate during planting, he can later spray or disc the bacteria into the soil.
Farmers should remember, however, that inoculants cannot tolerate direct sunlight or high temperatures.
With the widely-acclaimed advent of no-till planting, farmers can reduce the amount of seed planted and still produce a successful stand, Mr. White said. Fifteen pounds per acre, applied with an insecticide, should allow farmers four good cuttings annually.
