A crowd of almost 5,000 was treated to some exciting and close racing Saturday at the Rappahannock Hunt Point-to-Point meet at Sperrvville.
In the Ben Venue ownerrider timber race, second in the Arundel - Newspapers sponsored Seven Corners Championship series, Jeff LeHew’s Lucky and Bold won by a head over Don Yovanovich’s Never Time.
It was a first victory in the season-long series for LeHew, son of Rappahannock’s joint master of fox hounds. Larry LeHew. Last week at the Casanova Hunt races at Middleburg Lucky and Bold fell in his first attempt in the series.
For the first turn of the hilly 2'/- mile course the field of six well-matched hunters were closely bunched with David Semmes’ Phenom in the lead and Lucky and Bold trailing. Never Time set the pace for the second lap, and at the last of 14 fences Harry Wight, winner at Casanova last week, made a strong move. It was not Wight’s day for another victory, however, as his mount Hazy Sun crashed through the right hand panel, shooting him to the turf.
Lucky and Bold, coming from behind, closed rapidly on the leaders after the final fence, streaking up the stretch to catch Never Time at the wire. Third by a length was Phenom.
The open hurdle race was another hard fought duel.
