“This benefits so many people. When you weigh that against the little bit of damage it causes for a few, it seems to me we have no choice but to make an exception,” said Supervisor Clarence Baldwin as the Rappahannock board voted unanimously to approve a special exception allowing Amissville’s ballfields and eight acres to be deeded to the village’s Ruritan Club.
The courtroom was filled for Monday’s hearing on a request for the exception to the county’s subdivision ordinance. The overwhelming majority of the 35 or so people attending were in favor of Mrs, Luther Stuart’s proposal to subdivide her 11 acres in “downtown” Amissville, retaining a three acre lot with her house and donating the balance with three ballfields to the Ruritans.
“I respect and appreciate zoning law’s and what they're intended to do,” Mrs. Stuart said, adding, however, that an exception should be granted if it’s shown to be reasonable, needed and for the good of the community.
