But as bad as Strasburg was, Rappahannock wasn’t much better. Tommy Jenkins put in the first RCHS basket after a minute and a half of play and four Panther misses. Rapp’s boys then missed their next four attempts before Tom Sisk connected on a jumper from the foul line and Jenkins dropped in two free throws to make it 6-0 with 1:41 left. The Rams hit on short and long jumpers and then J.D. Bagnell swished a “hail Mary” try from half court to cut the lead to 8-7 at the buzzer.
The two teams battled back and fourth for the next two periods, tying the score four times in the second quarter with the Rams alternating between two and four point leads for most of the third.
The Panthers dominated the boards, 44-27, on rebounds but turned the ball over repeatedly. An inside shot at the buzzer by Ken Estes narrowed the lead to 51-57 but it wasn’t enough.
