The Rappahannock School Board met Tuesday to hear Superintendent Robert Estabrook’s budget proposals for 1984-85. The bottom line was 10 percent over the $2,354,662 allotment approved by the Board of Supervisors for the current school year.
Estabrook's proposed $2,592,716 spending plan includes two requests which met with considerable discussion this time last year: establishing a teachers’ salary index scale and authorizing architectural fees for the high school building renovation.
Index Plus Three Percent
Estabrook’s budget would raise teachers’ salary expenditures at the elementary school from $528,895 to $597,024 and at the high school from $430,617 to $444,987. This includes the “buy-in” costs (pay scale adjustments) to create an index (a schedule of distribution which rewards years of service with increased ratios—for instance, a teacher at the top of the scale with 25 years experience would earn $1.57 for each $1 paid to a first year teacher.)
