Switches in political parties are nothing new in Virginia. In recent years it has been a common occurrence as old-line Byrd Democrats sought reftige in the congenial warmth of Republican conservatism.
But the switching has been a one-way street. Indeed, the crowded avenue from the Democratic party to conservative Republicanism alarmed and distressed many old-line Republican moderates who saw their party first flooded and then taken over by the reftigees from Byrdland.
It had been a one-way street, that is, until last month.
