“Touchy Situations”
Scherschel won’t go so far as to say his work put him in danger although he does acknowledge that he’s been in “touchy situations." But not in battle torn Viet Nam and Korea or the powder keg countries of the Middle East and Central and South America. According to Joe, his closest brush came on the high seas. Riding in a life raft tossed about by 18 to 20 foot swells, he tried to board the hijacked ocean liner Santa Maria, only to be met by an armed crewman with other ideas. Joe remembers trying to convince the man that the refusal to let him board might amount to a death sentence; that he wouldn’t be able to work his way back down the swinging ladder and onto the raft. “But he didn’t care. He was going to shoot if I kept on coming. Now that was a touchy situation!”
