The Wakefield Outings Club extends an open invitation to the public to join hikes sponsored and organized by the group.
The club was started in 1980 by teachers Hunt Harris and Peter Quinn as an alternative to the skiing club in Wakefield's winter sports program. Its purpose is “to promote an awareness of the hiking and camping opportunities available in this area and to provide participants with limited basic instruction in outdoor skills, local history and folklore.”
The club now meets at least once a month, weather permitting, and anyone interested is welcome to join. Children 12 years of age or younger must be accompanied by a parent or guardian. Participants should bring a packed lunch and any additional items such as binoculars, back-pack, compass and identification booklets that they are willing to be responsible for. They should also wear comfortable, yet rugged, clothing and shoes or boots.
Hikes have included such spots as The Peak, Big Devils Stairs, Hazel Mountain Trail, Old Rag Mountain and White Oak Canyon. During winter and spring, the club has also sponsored over
