Retail prices for eggs, chicken and turkey have not risen as fast as overall consumer costs, points out Virginia Tech poultry specialist William Weaver. Weaver cites statistics that chicken prices have risen 74 percent’ and turkey prices 67 percent since 1960; during the same period the Consumer Price Index has more than tripled. '

Weaver credited * im* proved efficiency in the poultry industry for the steady prices.

However, he adopted a wait-and-see attitude regarding the long range effect of the avian flu on prices. “All in all the poultry industry is in a good economic situation," he said.
