Windy Drag were the early leaders, but as the six contenders raced across the far side of the 1 Vt mile righthanded course Uncle Edwin and Bend A Little leaped over tbe second last fence tegefte*..
Then at the last hurdle Bend A Little ran out and Alter Ego came on fast through the stretch to win by a nose over Mrs. Michael Sanger’s Uncle Edwin ridden by “Speedy” Smithwick. In third place was Marilyn Kett’s Fresh Escapade, Brooke Boyer riding.
This was a first start for Natalie Emery and Oliver Brown’s Alter Ego, brilliantly ridden by Mark Stickley. Started as a dressage horse and hunted by Mrs. Emery this season. Alter Ego was schooled only once over hurdles before the race.
Third race, the Mount Salem, a 2 mile ladies timber race, had several mishaps.
Blooming Bit took the lead but bobbled at the fence coming down Mason Mountain on the far side of the course, catapulting owner Shelley O’Higgins to the ground. He then interfered with the leading horses, Cricket’s Shadow and Point Alpha, causing them to go wide and miss the next fence — and thus be eliminated.
The way was open for Splashy Lea to take command on the next turn of the course, only to be challenged by Too Far Gone who came from behind to lead over the last fence.
